[The feed clicks on to show a girl dressed to the nines sitting on a rock. In the rain. In any other moment, Rachel Berry would appreciate the dramatic nuances of the scene, but for the moment? The girl looks scared, arms wrapped around herself, and she's shivering.]

This isn't funny. Whatever has happened, I'm going to figure it out. You hear me, Vocal Adrenaline?!

[And she's calling into the woods now, because obviously, this is the rival glee club's fault. ~~She's serious.~~]

I'm going to get back to the performance hall and we're going to win, without your cheating! I demand to be returned at once!

[Her bravado is broken by a small sob as Rachel tucks her head into her arms once again, totally ignorant of the PCD recording her.]

Oh, Finn, where are you?

That was after we decided to keep her. [That was a MEAN prank, Ed. And Al promptly lets the cat down. She hops right up onto Ed's lap and snuggles down, purring like a motor. She looooves him.]

Well... I spent a long time trying to think of a good name. And in the meantime we just called her Kitty. ... and then she wouldn't answer to anything else.

..... -=You let the fucking cat down. Ed's face immediately goes to >| as the cat settles down on his lap. And he reaches down to pat the kitty. Pat. Pat pat. It seems like an obnoxious petting, but he's really gentle with it.=-

It's the best name Al's ever given an animal. -=Thank the Animus the cat's name is Kitty.=- Or the smartest animal to name herself before Al tried to.

It... seems to like you.

[And the cat seems like it's well behaved. So Rachel is okay with the cat. She may or may not be nervous around the dogs, but she'll suck it up. She's tougher than she looks.]

Just because a cat likes you doesn't mean it's mentally off. Maybe the cat sees past your various flaws and faults and likes you anyway.

[Rachel doesn't think she could ever kill a rabbit. Ever. ... Adstring is going to be difficult.]

-=He finishes his tea and makes motions to get up.=-

[... she's not entirely sure how. Her talents include singing and choreography. And being annoying. But Rachel likes projects and she can manage to do something for the Elrics for taking her in.]

[Al reaches out to touch him lightly; Rachel will notice that he does that a lot, as if to make sure things are still there.]

You can take any of the free bedrooms you like, most of them are made up. If you let me know, I'll grab some fresh sheets.

-=Mutters something, not missing a beat and wrap his fingers around Al's hand and letting them slide away. HOW SUSPICIOUS!=-

You're really close.

[She pushes herself up with a tired smile.]

I don't have any brothers or sisters. -- I mean, my dads spent a lot of money to have me, so I guess it's only natural to have only one, and who could live up to me?

[You'll get the impression that Rachel's dads tell her she's a precious princess. A lot. But you might also get the impression that nobody else really does.]

It must be nice to have a brother.

[Al waves goodnight with a smile, watching him for another second. It's nice to see Ed up and about again, he has a tendency to shut everything out when he's depressed. Rachel doesn't know how grateful he already is to her; Ed needs a friend.]

Yeah... closer than most brothers, I guess. For a long time it was just the two of us. We've learned to depend on each other a lot. He might be rough around the edges, but that's partially because he's spent his life looking out for me -- and I might be a worrywart, but it's because someone had to take care of him, too.

[So much, in such simple words. Al turns back to her with a smile.]

It must be nice, having two dads. We have our mom, but our Dad... left when I was really young. I didn't see him again until I was a teenager, and he never stays long.

[The smile warms a bit. It's easy to see how much she loves her parents; but it's sad to think that she might not have anyone else she's very close to.]

I bet they're really nice.

They are really nice. They're the best dads anyone could ever ask for... and they made me out of love. They went through a ton of possible surrogate mothers before they found mine... I even met her, too, earlier this year, but that didn't work out over well.

[Rachel pauses on the memory before shaking her head with a grin.]

But they've given me everything I need to be a star. I can't ask for anything else. And they've given up a lot for me! I'm their dream child and they've always watched out for me. I've never really grown up... needing a mom, I guess, because I've had them.

It doesn't matter what form a parental figure takes, so long as you have that love and guidance, right?

[Al brightens, oh wow, so this was how.]

A surrogate? That's how they had you?

Yes! My biological mother, Shelby, she has such an amazing voice and she's really pretty and a great seamstress. But she's not really... a part of my life.

[She's quiet for a moment as she digests that.]

That's okay, though. Sometimes it's better that way. She can watch me from afar.
